Japanese Martial Arts

The eyes creaked open a little. It was dazzled by the sudden surge of bright gold. A drowsy arm reached for the watch beside the bed. A stream of pain emerges on top of the head all of a sudden. The drowsy arm quickly searches for the source of it. It rubbed the head to soothe and make the pain go away. I blinked and realized that the gaudy glare was from the light that I had not switched off the night before. I tried to remember what was causing this pain…

Then it filled my memory. It was all coming back.

I was really excited that morning. I woke a little bit late and got dressed as fast as I could. My heart was pounding and my mind racing as to today’s plan. I ran all the way to the bus to find that the lecturer is already waiting by the bus. Still puffing I quickly got on it. I knew that I was in for a new experience.

k12

It was another of those planned trips for the international students. It is so that the international students get the chance to bond and experience the culture of Japan. This trip took us to Niigata, the capital city of the Niigata prefecture. It is about one-hour drive from Nagaoka. First we went to the Niigata Science Museum.

I don't know this guy!

I dont know this guy!

I actually was quite surprised by our visit here. (I didn’t know actually). There, a whole kind of science exhibit was on display. I was really excited when I heard that there were dinosaurs on display! Well, as usual, the hype is always better than seeing the actual thing. All there was were rubber dinosaurs that were controlled by computers and some rocks with worms on it. I continued exploring the science world. More frequent than not stopping by posing for pictures. There were amazing stuffs with walking robots and gigantic planets and complex gears and all, but the part that I enjoyed most was eating ‘udon’. Udon is a kind of Japanese mee soup. You should try it! It’s better than walking around seeing all those science stuff.

udon oh udon

udon oh udon

Then, in the afternoon, we went to another place. This was the thing that we’ve (maybe I’ve) all been waiting for. The chance to experience Kendo and Karate for the first time. I must admit, I still have a crush on martial arts. I joined Taekwondo in high school but quitted it after I’ve achieved my goal in Taekwondo. At first I thought Kendo was a lame sport. Don’t get me wrong, but with the slow approach and the heavy gear which make its movement looks so hard. There were two sessions for us. First we got to learn Kendo and then Karate. Karate is what I’m looking for to be honest.

k1

k3

There were 16 of us and only 6 of the so called Kendo’s masters. We learned how to bow at the start of class as a sign of respect to each other. We bowed so low (almost in a sujud position) with the hands forming a triangular shape with the face entering it. It was done with due humbleness and respect. I was raring to go. First we learn how to move. It was not the usual movement with the other martial arts. This was a kind of gliding movement. Where you are required to move forward without even lifting your feet from the ground! I found it hard at first as my foot doesn’t seem to want to glide. It just keeps stopping. I tried it several times and at last got the hang of it.

k5

kendo1

With the advancement of our learning we were given a bamboo sword (shinai) in reminiscent to the real katana sword used by former warriors during the Edo era where Kendo wasn’t known for a sport but rather as a deadly weapon and the art of killing. It was the most known skill/art for killing then. We were thought the right way to hold it as holding it in the right position is essential to strike with guile. At least that was what were told!

kendo2

After a few sessions going back and forth perfecting the slick movement, it was time to learn the art of attacking the enemy, well in this case our partners/ friends! I learnt that there was 3 ways to attack. The first is a strike to the head. We were all nervous at first as we were told to strike hard on the head of the tutor of each group. (They said it was safe because they wore the helmet gear). I for one didn’t know how to strike it really. I mean should I hit it for real or just touch it. When striking that ‘fatal’ blow, the Kendo swordsman scream the word ‘MEN’ and move swiftly as if gliding past the opponent. Besides hitting the head, you can also strike to the hand and you refer to it as ‘KOTEI’. And the last one is the most difficult of them all, hitting the abdomen area. This is quite difficult as it requires the opposition to open up because this part is the most protected part in this sport. After each strike on the abdomen you have to shout ‘DOU’. I don’t know why they should shout after each strike? I guess it a kind of satisfaction after each move?

Then the time arrived that I dreaded the most. It was time for us to spar. I got the chance to wear the armour set called 防護 (Bōgu) set. My body was tightly strapped especially the helmet. Without long, sweat started to flow like ice in heat. It was not a sweat of warmness but sweats of excitement and anticipation! I could see through the bars inside the helmet gear. My heart thumped like drums. I was given the privilege of facing the Kendo instructor. We squatted and bowed a little and with a touch of shinai the duel began. I looked him in the eye looking for a way into his defenses. We locked eye contact as though seeing each other clearly for the first time. We circled each other faking as if to strike but I tried to counter attack him with a strike to the head while screaming ‘MEN’ but he just casually step aside and struck a blow to the head. I was stunned with the searing pain spearing from the top of the head to the tips of my hair.

“Try bluffing as if u’re trying to strike the head but instead go for the body! Mix ur moves and bluff more to confuse ur opponent” the master advised.

And then I did like he advised and with a bit of luck I managed to touch him. With a loud shout of the word ‘DOU’ I managed to get a point. I learned a lot that day. Even though I eventually lost the duel due to his superior skills and experience, but I learned an important lesson that day. A lesson not only for Kendo or Karate but a lesson in life. Through Kendo, I learnt that what is important in life is not to be too dependent and rigid on what we have learnt. But to mix it and learn as you go along. Only then you can strike that ‘fatal blow’ in facing life problems.

k9

Unlike Kendo, karate had a more similar feeling to what I’ve learned before. It moves are fast and precise. As the moves are a little bit difficult for beginners, we mostly watched the pros execute those difficult moves. I really enjoyed the day trip. I am hopeful for another bite at the Kendo sessions. You should try it too…

Thanks for sharing Idris. Saya sangat jeles! I hope one day the opportunity will come for me to experience the wonderful stuff in Japan (can tell I’m a Japan addict eh? *laughs*)

And Kendo! Subhanallah! That’s the closest to Samurai (that I can think of). My friend in Edinburgh is doing Kendo too and she says it’s a lot of fun. Apa kata kamu?

After this, maybe bile terasa nak ke Jepun..bolehla baca entry ni. ^_____^

  2. Ehem, apa yang telah di’achieve’ tu? Kongsi sikit… 🙂

But, yang best tentang karate is the KATA (bahasa taekwondo, poomse).

Nway, best jugak pakai suit armour tu.
To tell you the truth, mule2 cam nampak best r ketuk2 tu tapi bile sendiri dah pakai helmet tu ase takut plak bile kena ketuk.hehe.takut2 dorang tersalah pukul ke kan.sakit plak.huhu.
Hurm, saje je tiru tu.dah abis bosan2 jalan2 kat c2:p.hehe.time tu cam lapar n onda way nak cari udon.
Udon tu sedap. tapi lebih prefer soba kalau ade. Soba tu die halus2 sket berbanding dgn udon. Tapi sedap r. Kalau kat Jepun mesti kena try!hehe.

It’s my pleasure. I hope that through sharing my experiences I can further understand and realize the values in life. I am always looking forward to share with ur ur experiences also insyaAllah.
I certainly hope that u will get ur chance to come to Japan to experience for urselves to what Japan has to offer. What is it that u wanted to do most in Japan? (Jumpe Doraemon ke?hehe)

Although that was my first experience in Kendo but I really enjoyed it very much! I totally agree with ur friend that Kendo is a fun sport. I like all sports in general but I would rate Kendo as one of the better ones.
You what went through my head when I first wore that suit with helmet and stuff? I really thought that I a samurai! A samurai with bamboo swords. hehe. I think that Kendo in some ways resembles the Samurai.

I’ll try to share a lot more experiences in Japan in the future.

Yeh menang pingat kat UIA International Open. Kak Inda xpegi kot tournmnt mase tu. Time tu klu xsilap mase form 3 kot. Mase tu baru green belt tapi still dpt go through. Mase kat semi tu kaki tercedera, so terpakse concede walkover. But still dpt gangsa.:)hehe.
Nway, the real reason berhenti Taekwondo sbb waktu training tu slalu clash dgn waktu training bola.huhu. But still I loved Taekwondo. Kak Inda dah black belt dah kn? Nanti boley amik class akak ke kn?hehe. 🙂

Mase kak sekolah dulu ade diperkenalkan Aikido, tapi xmendapat sambutan sgt asenye. Aikido tu a bit macam judo ke?

Wow, bestnye dah try macam2 martial arts. University offer free karate classes ke? Skang pun practice Karate lagi ke? Aritu through my short experience in Karate, I was really amazed by the preciseness and sharpness of the moves shown in KATA. Its true what you said about kena jage nafas. Even in Taekwondo during sparring or etc kalau xjage pernafasan kite akan mudah letih and gerakan kite cam kurang bermaya kn?

p/s: skang practice Taekwondo lagi ke?

Personally I would like to go there again if I get the chance.

Yup, the evolution in the pictures supposed to be the Darwin theory. But as we have learnt the theory is absolutely absurd! There’s no truth in it whatsoever. I’m sure if you ask any Muslim scholars they would give u an insight on this theory and give u facts to deny this theory.
Kat course yg nadia blaja tu support or against this theory? just curious. Sbb mase kat sekolah dulu (kat England) they actually supported this theory of evolution but I always knew that this theory was nonsense.

That guy is the picture is actually me…( *shhh..dont tell anybody ye?)hehe. but still i’ll pretend that i dont know that guy in the picture.hehe.:)

Yeh pun pernah gak tengok pertunjukan Aikido mase kat sekolah dulu. Time tu memang sangat teruja r. Tapi xpernah try it for myself. Kalau anego dah try Aikido maybe anego boleh kongsikan pengalaman jugak ye?
Kalau ade peluang yeh syorkan try jugak r Kendo. Best jugak pegang macam pedang tu.ase macam samurai pun ade.hehe.:)

Like many other countries with 4 seasons, there’s always different things to experience throughout the year. But with Japan, I feel that it has something unique to offer other than the usual weather climate. Hope ur dreams will become a reality one day insyaAllah.

    Martial Arts eh… eto…

When i was in primary school, taekwando was my passion. Until i fell down, head first, during one of the training session, my father had never ever after that allowed me to join in any of them anymore. I was only a green belt holder at that time though but still, it’s a waste, aite?

I was half nerd during my junior high, besides there aren’t any martial arts classes in my school, so I didn’t take any…

Then sumhow, I got into this martial arts thingy feeling again and I joined Silat Harimau Jatian Lima when i was in Form 4 n 5. I convinced ayah that I’m already a big girl and sumhow he let me have my way. But after SPM, I didn’t continue taking classes nemore and it just ended like that. The ‘task’ now is taken by my brother who study in the same school i was b4 and he really did very well in silat(anugerah n all, bla-bla-bla). After all, he’s a boy, aite? Haha~

Kat sane ade gak ke yg mcm udon?

Obviously the answer would be – No!
Unless if you go to the Japanese Restaurant (yeah, we have one here), then maybe there is udon, but x pernah pergi pun! Huhu~

Glad to hear that u passed on the silat tradition to ur brother. U must b so proud of him kn? In a way, boys generally like to enter in competitions to ‘practice’ the martial arts in the real arena. Karate Kid was my all-time favorite movie.
Actually sbb tu r dulu I got involved in Taekwondo(kat sekolah dulu xde karate).
Goodluck and all the best ye in practicing Karate!

Salam Kak Su.=). How r u? Sori lambat reply sebab berbizi sket kebelakangan ni.huhu.
Wah,Kak Su pernah blaja silat cekak ek?Yeh sebenarnye teringin gak nak blaja silat tapi tak berkesempatan lagi. Ade jurulatih Taekwondo dulu die ckp, it doesnt matter kalau kite berbadan kecil berbanding lawan kite, tapi yang penting kite ade courage and ade mental strength nak outwit the opponent. With that, confidence and skill will come by itself.
Dulu yeh berbadan kecil gak asenye.hehe.

    salam ziarah…

enjoy this entry. hehe, saya sangat berharap satu hari nanti saya berpeluang belajar seni mempertahankan diri dari negara lain. teringin nak cuba aikedo dan sheijou kenji (alamak tak tahu la nak eja macam mana, hentam je la).

tapi, lepas abis belajar la. sebab dulu, masa saya aktif silat dan taekwando, result merundum. ibu terus haramkan huhu~

*laughs* kidding kidding. Nak tengok Sakura, how they integrate modernity with nature, tea ceremony, yukata, Shibuya, Odaiba, Hokkaido, Okinawa dan bermacam-macam lagi. My passion for Japanese-related issues/items ni critical sangat dah haha.

Yes yes!One of the reason why I have a liking for Kendo is because the feeling of being a Samurai. Samurai kakkoii!~ Though maybe Shinobi lagi best but anyway..Samurai best.

Pernah cuba Japanese archery tak? Siap dengan Yukata dia etc?

Fuh,42 komen. Boleh tahan blog nih, hihi.

Sheikh, tak try silat cekak or silat gayung ? Aku dulu masa kat sekolah menengah berminat jugak dengan taekwando, tapi yurannya mahal sangat, so terpaksa give up. Tambah2 lagi, budak taekwando kat sekolah dulu rata-ratanya tak power real sparring, haha.

Si johan pun rasanya belajar silat cekak kan.

Nway, belajarlah apa-apa martial art pun asalkan ia bermanfaat ketika masanya diperlukan. Dan teruskan menimba ilmu2 martial art yer. Boleh buat kenangan 🙂

    Salam. Thanks for visiting:)
Aikido n sheijou kenji (xtau nak eja jugak..hehe)sounds fun too. I`ve never tried it before too. Hopefully u`ll get the chance to try it one day. Kat universiti skang ade bukak kelas utk foreign martial arts ke?

Wow, u`ve actually tried silat n Taekwondo ye? U must like martial arts a lot kn? For me, martial arts ni byk teach kite stuff yg xdiajar dlm klas. Dgn tu akan ajar kite about discipline n responsibility kn. Maybe in the future u could show that through martial arts u could handle the other responsibilities as well kn. Lame ke masuk Taekwondo n silat dulu time sekolah tu?
All the best in whatever u do ye! I am thinking about taking up martial arts again some time soon.

Erm, yang Kendo is actually quite fun.Org yang ajar tu ckp, kalau follow the rules kite xakan sakit sgt sbb dah pakai protective helmet n everything.

p/s: may I link ur blog with mine?

    Reply for ‘Aqilah,
Hye! Wow, u really love Japan don`t u? Do u have any plans to visit here sometimes soon?
I guess I am lucky coz I have a tree in front of my room. In Spring, it blossoms into Sakura. Its very beautiful. The Japanese would gather in the masses under the sakura trees during the season and would have bbq or picnic with friends and family.
FYI, next year I will be furthering my studies in Hokkaido. I heard that it is very beautiful there and famous for its big fishes n crabs!! Its gonna be way colder there though.

I`ve never tried Japanese archery yet. But I heard that the university is gonna replace the martial arts stuff with archery next year! If I`m not wrong, the archery thing is called `Yumi` in Japanese.

Erm, xpernah try silat lagi seumur hidup. Teringin sangat nak try tapi xberkesempatan lagi.huhu. Ape lagi nanti boleylah ajar sket2 kn?hehe. Ko ingat x `silat John` yang aku wat?hehe. amacam, ade gaye ala2 silat x?hehe.Video tu ade kat mane ek?tibe2 terase nak tgk balik je.

Tu r,kadang2 belt ape yang kite pegang tu xbape penting bg aku but yg pentingnye kite blaja melalui hati kn. Baru ade feel n boley praktikkan ngan betul kn? Time aku msk tournment tu, aku green belt je mase tu pn. ade gak r kalahkn black belt.(smpai arini cm bangga je.huhu)

I totally agree with u=). Kite patut belajar n amik mane yg baik kn. U keep learning martial arts ye bro!

lama juga join martial art..tapi, lama juga stop hehe sebab kecederaan..habis semua sport lasak tak boleh nak join..sedih sedih..

taekwan-do n silat tak punch kepala tapi karate boleh (masa pertandingan la)..in real, mana ada orang ikut rules kan..tapi, sekali kena masa karate tu, berpinar juga la kepala hehe..
